纪伯伦的《先知》和《沙与沫》

纪伯伦的散文诗想象丰富,感情深挚,富于哲理,韵味隽永。纪伯伦的诗歌创作比散文作品的内容更广泛,他超越了对具体时弊的激愤和控诉,而转向对人生世事的理性思考。他的诗作自始至终贯穿着爱与美的主题,在对大自然的讴歌中抒发了对自由、理想、爱情与美的渴望;在对人生经历的描绘中无不蕴含着对人生真谛的探索。他用英文创作的散文诗集《先知》、《沙与沫》就是这类散文诗的代表作。
《先知》(1923)是一部哲理性甚强的抒情诗集,凝聚了纪伯伦的全部心血,是他创作的顶峰,引人瞩目。这部作品在纪伯伦心中酝酿了十几年。在他母亲生前,他就用阿拉伯文写成。母亲肯定了这部作品,但认为要发表尚需进一步加工。五年后,纪伯伦又重写这部作品,但仍感不足,最后还是全部推翻。20年代初,纪伯伦用英文写出。经过多次修改,终于实现了“写就一本小书”的宏愿。他把《先知》看作“第二次降生”,表达了使他“成为站在太阳面前一个自由人的唯一思想”。
纪伯伦在这部作品中塑造了一位名叫“亚墨斯达法”(一译“艾勒?穆斯塔法”)的智者。他正准备回到阔别已久的故乡,就在他依依惜别的时刻,一位对他抱有诚信的女子“爱尔美差”来到殿前广场,向作别的智者表达最诚挚的祝愿,请他“讲说真理”。于是智者开始回答送行者的提问。这些问题涉及到“生和死中间的一切”,人生和社会的26个方面——爱与憎、美与丑、善与恶、罚与罪、工作与逸乐、理性与热情、法律与自由、婚姻与友谊、教育与宗教……他要把人类的“真我”披露给人们。
《沙与沫》也是一部闪烁着丰富哲理思想的诗集,它涉及人生、爱情、文学、艺术等方面。
关于爱情,他说:
爱情是一个光明的字,被一只光明的手写在一张光明的册页上的。
爱情是情人之间的面幕。
每一个男子都爱着两个女人:一个是他想象的作品,另外一个没有生下来。
纪伯伦痛恨旧制度、旧传统,曾招来封建统治者和教会势力的谩骂,有人说他是“疯子”、“狂人”,他轻蔑地回答:
他们认为我疯了,因为我不肯拿我的光阴去换金钱;
我认为他们是疯了,因为他们以为我的光阴是可以估价的。
纪伯伦有他自己的价值观,他是不甘接受权势与金钱的奴役和驱使的。他说:
我宁可做人类中有梦想和有完成梦想的愿望的、最渺小的人,而不愿做
一个最伟大的、无梦想、无愿望的人。
最可怜的人是把他的梦想变成金银的人。
真正伟大的人是不压制人也不受人压制的人。
如果你嘴里含满了食物,你怎能歌唱呢?
如果你手里握满金钱,你怎能举起祝福之手呢?
纪伯伦认为诗歌是“神圣灵魂的体现”,“供它的营养的是灵魂,供它饮用的是感情”。在《沙与沫》中,他说:
诗是迷醉心怀的智慧。
智慧是心思里唱歌的诗。
诗不是一种表白出来的意见。它是从一个伤口或一个笑口涌出的一首歌曲。

在第十二年绮露收获之月的第七天,他出城登上山顶,向海凝望;他看见了他的船在烟雾中驶来。
他的心门砉然地开了,他的喜乐在海面飞翔。他合上眼,在灵魂的严静中祷告。
The Coming of the Ship
Almustafa, the chosen and the beloved, who was adawn onto his own day, had waited twelve years in the city ofOrphalese for his ship that was to return and bear him back to theisle of his birth.
And in the twelfth year, on the seventh day ofIelool, the month of reaping, he climbed the hill without the citywalls and looked seaward; and he beheld the ship coming with themist.
Then the gates of his heart were flung open, andhis joy flew far over the sea. And he closed his eyes and prayed inthe silences of his soul.

But as he descended the hill, a sadness cameupon him, and he thought in his heart: How shall I go in peace andwithout sorrow? Nay, not without a wound in the spirit shall Ileave this city.
Long were the days of pain I have spent withinits walls, and long were the nights of aloneness; and who candepart from his pain and his aloneness without regret?
Too many fragments of the spirit have I scatterdin these streets, and too many are the children of my longing thatwalk naked among these hills, and I cannot withdraw from themwithout a burden and an ache.
It is not a garment I cast off this day, but askin that I tear with my own hands.
Nor is it a thought I leave behind me, but aheart made sweet with hunger and with thirst.
Yet I cannot tarry longer.
The sea that calls all things unto her calls me,and I must embark.

For to stay, though the hours burn in the night,is to freeze and crystallize and be bound in a mould.
Fain would I take with me all that is here. Buthow shall I?
A voice cannot carry the tongue and the lipsthat give it wings. Alone must it seek the ether.
And alone and without his nest shall the eaglefly across the sun.
Now when he reached the foot of the hill, heturned again towards the sea, and he saw his ship approaching theharbour, and upon her prow the mariners, the men of his ownland.
And his soul cried out to them, and hesaid:
Sons of my ancient mother, you riders of thetides, how often have you sailed in my dreams. And now you come inmy awakening, which is my deeper dream.

Ready am I to go, and my eagerness with sailsfull set awaits the wind.
Only another breath will I breathe in this stillair, only another loving look cast backward.
Then I shall stand among you, a seafarer amongseafarers.
And you, vast sea, sleepless mother,
Who alone are peace and freedom to the river andthe stream,
Only another winding will this stream make, onlyanother murmur in this glade,
And then shall I come to you, a boundless dropto aboundless ocean.
And as he walked he saw from afar men and womenleaving their fields and their vineyards and hastening towards thecity gates.
And he heard their voices calling his name, andshouting from field to field telling one another of the coming ofthe ship.

Shall the day of parting be the day ofgathering?
And shall it be said that my eve was in truth mydawn?
And what shall I give unto him who has left hisplough in midfurrow, or to him who has stopped the wheel of hiswinepress?
Shall my heart become a tree heavy-laden withfruit that I may gather and give unto them?
And shall my desires flow like a fountain that Imay fill their cups?
Am I a harp that the hand of the mighty maytouch me, or a flute that his breath may pass through me?

A seeker of silences am I, and what treasurehave I found in silences that I may dispense with confidence?
If this is my day of harvest, in what fieldshave I sowed the seed, and in what unremembered seasons?
If this indeed be the hour in which I lift up mylantern, it is not my flame that shall burn therein.
Empty and dark shall I raise my lantern,
And the guardian of the night shall fill it withoil and he shall light it also.
These things he said in words. But much in hisheart remained unsaid. For he himself could not speak his deepersecret.
And when he entered into the city all the peoplecame to meet him, and they were crying out to him as with onevoice.
城中的长老走上前来说:
你不要离开我们。
在我们的朦胧里,你是正午的潮者,你青春的气度,给我们以梦想。

Go not yet away from us.
A noontide have you been in our twilight, andyour youth has given us dreams to dream.
No stranger are you among us, nor a guest, butour son and our dearly beloved.
Suffer not yet our eyes to hunger for yourface.
And the priests and the priestesses said untohim:
Let not the waves of the sea separate us now,and the years you have spent in our midst become a memory.
You have walked among us a spirit, and yourshadow has been a light upon our faces.

Much have we loved you. But speechless was ourlove, and with veils has it been veiled.
Yet now it cries aloud unto you, and would standrevealed before you.
And ever has it been that love knows not its owndepth until the hour of separation.
And others came also and entreated him.
But he answered them not. He only bent his head;and those who stood near saw his tears falling upon hisbreast.
And he and the people proceeded towards thegreat square before the temple.
And there came out of the sanctuary a womanwhose name was Almitra. And she was a seeress.
And he looked upon her with exceedingtenderness, for it was she who had first sought and believed in himwhen he had been but a day in their city.

现在你的船儿来了,你必须归去。

And she hailed him, saying:
Prophet of God, in quest for the uttermost, longhave you searched the distances for your ship.
And now your ship has come, and you must needsgo.
Deep is your longing for the land of yourmemories and the dwelling place of your greater desires; and ourlove would not bind you nor our needs hold you.
Yet this we ask ere you leave us, that you speakto us and give us of your truth.
And we will give it unto our children, and theyunto their children, and it shall not perish.
In your aloneness you have watched with ourdays, and in your wakefulness you have listened to the weeping andthe laughter of our sleep.
Now therefore disclose us to ourselves, and tellus all that has been shown you of that which is between birth anddeath.

Love
Then said Almitra, “Speak to us of Love.”
And he raised his head and looked upon thepeople, and there fell a stillness upon them. And with a greatvoice he said:
When love beckons to you follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.
当他的翅翼围卷你们的时候,屈服于他,
虽然那藏在羽翮中间的剑刃也许会伤毁你们。
当他对你们说话的时候,信从他,
虽然他的声音也许会把你们的梦魂击碎,如同北风吹荒了林园。

For even as love crowns you so shall he crucifyyou. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.
Even as he ascends to your height and caressesyour tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,
So shall he descend to your roots and shake themin their clinging to the earth.

Like sheaves of corn he gathers you untohimself.
He threshes you to make you naked.
He sifts you to free you from your husks.
He grinds you to whiteness.
He kneads you until you are pliant.
And then he assigns you to his sacred fire, thatyou may become sacred bread for God’s sacred feast.
All these things shall love do unto you that youmay know the secrets of your heart, and in that knowledge become afragment of Life’s heart.
假如你在你的疑惧中,只寻求爱的和平与逸乐,
那不如掩盖你的裸露,而躲过爱的筛打,
而走入那没有季候的世界,在那里你将欢笑,却不是尽量的笑悦;你将哭泣,却没有流干了眼泪。
爱除自身外无施与,除自身外无接受。
爱不占有,也不被占有。
因为爱在爱中满足了。
当你爱的时候,你不要说“上帝在我的心中”,却要说“我在上帝的心里”。
不要想你能导引爱的路程,因为若是他觉得你配,他就导引你。
But if in your fear you would seek only love’speace and love’s pleasure,
Then it is better for you that you cover yournakedness and pass out of love’s threshing-floor,
Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh,but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of yourtears.
Love gives naught but itself and takes naughtbut from itself.
Love possesses not nor would it bepossessed;
For love is sufficient unto love.
When you love you should not say, “God is in myheart,” but rather, “I am in the heart of God.”
And think not you can direct the course of love,if it finds you worthy, directs your course.
爱没有别的愿望,只要成全自己。
但若是你爱,而且需求愿望,就让以下的做你的愿望罢:
溶化了你自己,像溪流般对清夜吟唱着歌曲。
要知道过度温存的痛苦。
让你对爱的了解毁伤了你自己。
而且甘愿地喜乐地流血。
清晨醒起,以喜蜺的心来致谢这爱的又一日;
日中静息,默念爱的浓欢;
晚潮退时,感谢地回家;
然后在睡时祈祷,因为有被爱者在你的心中,有赞美之歌在你唇上。
Love has no other desire but to fulfilitself.
But if you love and must needs have desires, letthese be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that singsits melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding oflove.
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
To wake at dawn with a winged heart and givethanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love’secstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And then to sleep with a prayer for the belovedin your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.
