1
Thou hast made me endless, such is thy pleasure. This frail
vessel thouemptiest again and again, and fillest it ever with fresh life.
This little flute of a reed thou hast carried over hills
anddales, and hast breathed through it melodies eternally new.
At the immortal touch of thy hands my little heart loses its
limits injoy and gives birth to utterance ineffable.
Thy infinite gifts come to me only on these very small hands
ofmine. Ages pass, and still thou pourest, and still there is room to fill.
2
When thou commandest me to sing it seems that my heart would
breakwith pride; and I look to thy face, and tears come to my eyes.
All that is harsh and dissonant in my life melts into one
sweetharmony—and my adoration spreads wings like a glad bird on its flight
acrossthe sea.
I know thou takest pleasure in my singing. I know that only as
asinger I come before thy presence.
I touch by the edge of the far spreading wing of my song thy
feetwhich I could never aspire to reach.
Drunk with the joy of singing I forget myself and call thee
friendwho art my lord.
2
“Ah, poet, the evening draws near;your hair is
turning grey.
“Do you in your lonely musing hearthe message of
the hereafter?” “It is evening,” the poet said, “andI am listening
because some one may call from the village, late though it be.
“I watch if young straying heartsmeet together and two pairs of
eager eyes beg for music to break their silenceand speak for them.
“Who is there to weave theirpassionate songs, if I sit on the
shore of life and contemplate death and thebeyond?
“The early evening star disappears.
“The glow of a funeral pyre slowlydies by the slient river.
“Jackals cry in chorus from thecourtyard of the deserted house
in the light of the worn-out moon.
“If some wanderer leaving home, comehere to watch the night and
with bowed head listen to the murmur of the darkness, who is there to whisper
the secrets of life into his ears if I, shutting mydoors, should try to free
myself from mortal bonds?
“It is a trifle that my hair isturning grey.
“I am ever as young or as old as theyoungest and the oldest of
this village.
“Some have smiles, sweet and simple, and some a sly twinkle in
their eyes.
“Some have tears that well up in thedaylight, and others tears
that are hidden in the gloom.
“They all have need for me and Ihave no time to brood over the
afterlife.
“I am of an age with each, whatmatter if my hair turns grey?”
3
In the morning I cast my net into the sea.
I dragged up from the dark abyss things of strange aspect
andstrange beauty—some shone like a smile, some glistened like tears, and
somewere flushed like the cheeks of a bride.
When with the day’s burden I went home, my love was sitting in
thegarden idly tearing the leaves of a flower.
I hesitated for a moment, and then placed at her feet all that I
haddragged up, and stood silent.
She glanced at them and said, “What strange things are these? I
knownot of what use they are! ”
I bowed my head in shame and thought, “I have not fought for
these,I did not buy them in the market; they are not fit gifts for her.”
Then the whole night through I flung them one by one into
thestreet.
In the morning travellers came; they picked them up and carried
theminto far countries.
