作为中国人，我们很有必要让中国以外的国家尽量了解中国文化。让外国人能够从中国文化的深度上来认识能够代表中国行事者的行为准则，而不是按照谎言或者自己国内的政治需要来看待中国。另外，还由于种种的原因，许许多多的中国人包括知识分子在内，对于自己文化特色的认识也是远远不够的，即使在大学校园里面，文科的学生可能好一点，非文科的学生懂得自己的优秀文化传统的人已经相当少，至于珍惜自己的文学。
因此，吕家林和杨山青主编的《汉英文化读本》便诞生了。
内容简介
《汉英文化读本》是由吕家林和杨山青主编。
他们选取从先秦到近代的名言警句、著名的诗章和*秀的散文名篇(
短篇)，也就是比较能够反映中华文化特色又为通俗较为熟悉的内容。我们的内容由四部分构成，古诗文和名言警句之原文与出处，简明扼要的注释，白话译文，依据白话译文并斟酌原文而来的英语译文。他们的选文尽量选取比较可靠的本子，注释和白话翻译参考过名家和他人的意见，英语翻译参考过名家的译文(都不专门列出，在此表示谢意)，但主要是他们自己的观点，白话译文以忠实于原文为原则，能够直译的就直译并适当兼顾通俗流畅，以便于阅读。诗歌的英语翻译没有按照英语诗歌要求的格律进行翻译，而是翻译为更为通俗易懂的散文。
