Inthetwo-yearsequenceoftheFeynmanLecturesonPhysicswhichweregivenfromSeptember1961throughMay1963fortheintroductoryphysicscourseatCaltech,theconceptsofquantumphysicswerebroughtinwhenevertheywerenecessaryforanunderstandingofthephenomenabeingdescribed.Inaddition,thelasttwelvelecturesofthesecondyearweregivenovertoamorecoherentintroductiontosomeoftheconceptsofquantummechanics.Itbecameclearasthelecturesdrewtoaclose,however,thatnotenoughtimehadbeenleftforthequantummechanics.Asthematerialwasprepared,itwascontinuallydiscoveredthatotherimportantandinterestingtopicscouldbetreatedwiththeelementarytoolsthathadbeendeveloped.TherewasalsoafearthatthetoobrieftreatmentoftheSchrodingerwavefunctionwhichhadbeenincludedinthetwelfthlecturewouldnotprovideasufficientbridgetothemoreconventionaltreatmentsofmanybooksthestudentsmighthopetoread.Itwasthereforedecidedtoextendtheserieswithsevenadditionallectures;theyweregiventothesophomoreclassinMayof1964.Theselecturesroundedoutandextendedsomewhatthematerialdevelopedintheearlierlectures.
Inthetwo-yearsequenceoftheFeynmanLecturesonPhysicswhichweregivenfromSeptember1961throughMay1963fortheintroductoryphysicscourseatCaltech,theconceptsofquantumphysicswerebroughtinwhenevertheywerenecessaryforanunderstandingofthephenomenabeingdescribed.Inaddition,thelasttwelvelecturesofthesecondyearweregivenovertoamorecoherentintroductiontosomeoftheconceptsofquantummechanics.Itbecameclearasthelecturesdrewtoaclose,however,thatnotenoughtimehadbeenleftforthequantummechanics.Asthematerialwasprepared,itwascontinuallydiscoveredthatotherimportantandinterestingtopicscouldbetreatedwiththeelementarytoolsthathadbeendeveloped.TherewasalsoafearthatthetoobrieftreatmentoftheSchrodingerwavefunctionwhichhadbeenincludedinthetwelfthlecturewouldnotprovideasufficientbridgetothemoreconventionaltreatmentsofmanybooksthestudentsmighthopetoread.Itwasthereforedecidedtoextendtheserieswithsevenadditionallectures;theyweregiventothesophomoreclassinMayof1964.Theselecturesroundedoutandextendedsomewhatthematerialdevelopedintheearlierlectures.
