Empennage
The empennage or tail assembly provides stability and control forthe aircraft. The empennage is composed of two main parts: thevertical stabilizer (fin) to which the rudder is attached; and thehorizontal stabilizer to which the elevators are attached. Thesestabilizers of the airplane help to keep the airplane pointed intothe wind. When the tail end of the airplane tries to swing toeither side, the wind pushes against the tail surfaces, returningit to its proper place. The rudder and elevators allow the pilot tocontrol the yaw and pitch motion of the airplane, respectively.
The tail at the rear of the plane provides stability. The fin isthe vertical part of the tail. The rudder at the back of the planemoves left and right to control the left or right movement of theplane. The elevators are found at the rear of the plane. They canbe raised or lowered to change the direction of the plane’s nose. The plane will go up or down depending on the direction of that theelevators are moved.
The empennage is the rear part of the aircraft. Usually itincludes the stabilizers, rudder and elevator as many othercomponents. In fighter jets it may be constructed around theexhaust nozzle, as in some three-engine airplanes (with the thirdengine in the fuselage). In commercial aircrafts the empennage isbuilt from the cabin pressure-cone and may contain the Flight DataRecorder (black box), Cockpit Voice Recorder and the pressureout-flow valve.
