Wehavenotgoneveryfar.
Westillknowverylittlebutwehavereachedthepointwhere(withafairdegreeofaccuracy),wecanguessatmanythings.
InthischapterIshalltellyoubow(accordingtoourbestbelief)thestagewassetforthefirstappearanceofman.
Ifwerepresentthetimeduringwhichithasbeenpossibleforanimallifetoexistuponourplanetbyalineofthislength,thenthetinylinejustbelowindicatestheageduringwhichman(oracreaturemoreorlessresemblingman)hasliveduponthisearth.

Formillionsofyearsitdriftedaimlesslywiththecurrents.Butduringallthattimeitwasdevelopingcertainhabitsthatitmightsurvivemoreeasilyupontheinhospitableearth.Someofthesecellswerehappiestinthedarkdepthsofthelakesandthepools.Theytookrootinthelimysedimentswhichhadbeencarrieddownfromthetopsofthehillsandtheybecameplants.Otherspreferredtomoveaboutandtheygrewstrangejointedlegs,likescorpionsandbegantocrawlalongthebottomoftheseaamidsttheplantsandthepalegreenthingsthatlookedlikejelly-fishes.Stillothers(coveredwithscales)dependeduponaswimmingmotiontogofromplacetoplaceintheirsearchforfood,andgraduallytheypopulatedtheoceanwithmyriadsoffishes.
Meanwhiletheplantshadincreasedinnumberandtheyhadtosearchfornewdwellingplaces.Therewasnomoreroomforthematthebottomofthesea.Reluctantlytheyleftthewaterandmadeanewhomeinthemarshesandonthemudbanksthatlayatthefootofthemountains.Twiceadaythetidesoftheoceancoveredthemwiththeirbrine.Fortherestofthetime,theplantsmadethebestoftheiruncomfortablesituationandtriedtosurviveinthethinairwhichsurroundedthesurfaceoftheplanet.Aftercenturiesoftraining,theylearnedhowtoliveascomfortablyintheairastheyhaddoneinthewater.Theyincreasedinsizeandbecameshrubsandtreesandatlasttheylearnedhowtogrowlovelyflowerswhichattractedtheattentionofthebusybigbumble-beesandthebirdswhocarriedtheseedsfarandwideuntilthewholeearthhadbecomecoveredwithgreenpastures,orlaydarkundertheshadowofthebigtrees.
Butsomeofthefishestoohadbeguntoleavethesea,andtheyhadlearnedhowtobreathewithlungsaswellaswithgills.Wecallsuchcreaturesamphibious,whichmeansthattheyareabletolivewithequaleaseonthelandandinthewater.Thefirstfrogwhocrossesyourpathcantellyouallaboutthepleasuresofthedoubleexistenceoftheamphibian.
Onceoutsideofthewater,theseanimalsgraduallyadaptedthemselvesmoreandmoretolifeonland.Somebecamereptiles(creatureswhocrawllikelizards)andtheysharedthesilenceoftheforestswiththeinsects.Thattheymightmovefasterthroughthesoftsoil,theyimprovedupontheirlegsandtheirsizeincreaseduntiltheworldwaspopulatedwithgiganticforms(whichthehand-booksofbiologylistunderthenamesofIchthyosaurusandMegalosaurusandBrontosaurus)whogrewtobethirtytofortyfeetlongandwhocouldhaveplayedwithelephantsasafullgrowncatplayswithherkittens.
