《社会语言学通览》由27篇文章组成的文集，文章多由知名社会语言学学者撰写，每篇文章都综述了一个分支领域或专题的研究状况，较适宜作为语言学学者以及对社会语言学有所了解的研究生的参考书。本书分为四个部分：头一部分为”基础”，涉及社会语言学的一些基本问题和基本状况；第二部分谈”微观社会语言学”方面的研究，关注的是言语特征及其与社会环境的关系，以及言语特征如何受到社会因素的影响；第三部分谈”宏观社会语言学”方面的研究，该领域将语言问题看作社会问题的一部分，致力于描绘和探索社会对语言的所作所为；第四部分介绍了社会语言学在特定实践领域的应用。
