You learn to read best by reading a lot. iRead New English Readers makes this
possible. Reading becomes enjoyable and at the same time you learn English! You learn
through lots of exciting and interesting stories. You link the stories to your own
life and the world around you. You learn to use reading strategies and develop your
thinking skills, express your ideas, opinions and emotions, and you learn about your
own and other cultures. iRead New English Readers are based on the R.E.A.D.I.N.G.
system. Each letter stands for a stage you go through: Read (lots of stories);
Explore (what you already know); Activate (do exercises and projects); Discover (new
language and ideas), Integrate (reading with speaking and writing in projects),
Nurture (read more and more) and Grow (become a skillful reader). iRead =

A long time ago there was a young boy called Ma Liang. He was poor and he spent every
day looking after a rich man’s cattle. But what Ma Liang liked most was to draw. All
day long, he drew pictures in the soft earth with his stick.
One night Ma Liang had a dream. In the dream an old man came to him while he was with
the cattle.
“What do you want?” Ma Liang asked, looking up from his drawing.
“I want to give this to you,” replied the old man. “Use it to help the poor
people.”
The old man gave Ma Liang a paintbrush.
When Ma Liang woke up he shook his head. What a strange dream!
He washed and had breakfast. Then he noticed the paintbrush on his table. He picked
it up and looked at it. He did not remember seeing it before.
But he was already late. So he rushed out of the house to look after the cattle. In
the countryside, he observed other people working in the fields. It was not an easy
life. There was not much water. The plants did not grow well. Everybody was hungry
most of the time.
That evening he painted the fields. But next to the fields, in his painting, he added
a wide river.
Chapter 6 Androids
Today, we can’t live without robot machines. Using the technology of robotics,
scientists design, build, and operate all kinds of robots. Scientists also create
computer programmes to tell the robots what to do, and to collect information from
them.
Robots are taking the place of humans, and they can perform very boring or dangerous
jobs in factories, like building cars. They can carry heavier things than humans can,
like containers. They can also go into hard to reach places, like outer space or the
bottom of the sea. Once there, they can send back information to the scientists
managing them.
Science fiction has also shown us more intelligent kinds of robots. The androids in
science fiction books and films are often able to think and move independently. Is
science still far behind in this area?
