In order to release my nervousness, I tried to talk with the student nearby.
She was a Ukraine, with blonde hair and blue eyes. ! said, “I heard that youhave read a lot of novels that are listed in the note of English literature, whichone do you like most?” When I was speaking, all the other four foreignersstopped their business, and looked at me. I found my face was red bbcause ofattracting too much attention.
“Ah, I love the Marry Shelly’s book.”
“Pardon?” I did not quite understand the name out of my nervousness.
She turned to her friends, said something in Ukrainian, and laughed. I wasannoyed and flustered in my heart. I smiled with dignity, “ Excuses me, but I justdidn’t get your meaning.”
She stopped laughing, and smiled to me politely, and said, “You could find iton the Internet.”
“Oh, maybe you didn’t get me. What I asked was whose book do you likebest?” My palms were wet. I insisted to make myself clear.
“Ah, I said Marry Shelly’s.”
“Can you write it down?” I still thought what she was saying was the title ofthe book.
“Oh, Marry Shelly! I like her books, too. The first science fiction. I read itin English when I was a high school student”.
“Yes. Wow, cool.” She was a little excited. Her eyes were shining.
I wanted to talk more about the book when another foreign student cut in inPolish. She seemed to ask her whether she read in English as I did. Then they twobegan their conversation. She shook her head, and said she read in Ukrainian. The other foreign students cast a glance with disbelief.
