Teens, Television, and Depression
A new study suggests that the more teenagers watch television, the more likely they are to develop depression as young adults. Butthe extent to which TV may or may not be to blame is a questionthat the study leaves unanswered.
The researchers used a national long-term survey of adolescenthealth toinvestigate the relationship between media use anddepression. They based theirfindings on more than four thousandadolescents who were not depressed when the survey began innineteen ninety-five. As part of the survey, the young peoplewereasked how many hours of television or videos they watched daily.Theywere also asked how often they played computer games andlistened to the radio.Media use totaled an average of five andone-half hours a day. More than twohours of that was spent watchingTV.
Seven years later, in two thousand two, more than seven percentof theyoung people had signs of depression. The average age at thattime wastwenty-one.
Brian Primack at the University of Pittsburgh medical school wasthe leadauthor ofthe new study. He says every extra hour oftelevision meant an eightpercent increase in the chances ofdeveloping signs of depression.
The researchers say they did not find any such relationship withthe use ofother media such as movies, video games or radio. But thestudy did find thatyoung men were more likely than young women todevelop depression given thesame amount of media use. DoctorPrimack says the study did not explore ifwatching TV causesdepression. But one possibility, he says, is that it may taketimeaway from activities that could help prevent depression.
