SKA Pathfinders SynergiesContents/
Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) is funded
by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and managed by the
National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC),
together with Guizhou provincial government as a cooperation partner. Multibeam and
multiband receivers have been installed on the FAST, covering a frequency
range of 70MHz3 GHz (with capacity for upgrade to X band). The FAST is being
commissioned at the moment with the key science drivers focusing on Pulsar and
HⅠstudies.
Construction of MeerKAT, a 64element
array of 13.5m offset parabolic antennas, is just completed in July close to the
SKA central site on the South African Karoo plateau and should start its Large
Survey Projects(LSPs) in the 2nd half year 2018. It will be merged with 133 15m SKA
antennas in about 2025 to become SKA1mid. Large surveys
will also get soon underway on the SKA pathfinders ASKAP in Australia and
Apertif in the Netherlands. The CHILES survey (highz galaxies
at HⅠ) is well underway and CHIME will start soon his “intensity
mapping”experiments.
With FAST and the SKA pathfinders (MeerKAT,
ASKAP, Apertif, LOFAR, MWA), resulting from the SKA global cooperation, we will
be able to detect hundreds and even some thousands of new pulsars, as well as
study in details the HⅠgas in nearby galaxies. With improvements in both sensitivity and
resolution, the combination of FAST (single dish) and the (array) pathfinders
instruments can probe the low column density gas (cosmic web) and low mass
galaxies in a large area of their common sky, while HⅠintensity
mapping can map large volume for cosmological BAO measurement.
In order to strengthen the science
cooperation between the FAST (the world’s largest single dish telescope) in
China and the different precursors of the SKA, we had a 2.5 days workshop, held
in the Astronomy Town of Pingtang County (close to the FAST site), in Guizhou
Province on June 1315, 2018.
/FASTMeerKAT and SKA
Pathfinders SynergiesThe main goal is to explore the synergies between the FAST
and the different SKA pathfinders as a leadin to the SKAera. The
main science themes are: Pulsar research, HⅠresearch, HⅠintensity
mapping, Cosmic Magnetism and Radio Instrumentation. This meeting is part of
the activity of the 2018 Radio Astronomical Forum (RAF 2018), which is an
astronomical event held in Guizhou Province every year.
