王母娘娘的宝扇
The Queen Mother’s Precious Fan
再说这天早晨玉帝坐在凌霄殿上，忽听内侍禀报：“王母求见。”
Meanwhile,
that morning, the Jade Emperor was in the Entry Hall of the Jade Palace
when he suddenly heard a report: “The Queen Mother is here.”
玉帝嘀咕：“一大早这老太婆来干什么？”
“What is my wife doing here so early in the morning?” the Jade Emperor whispered to himself.
只见王母上得殿来，怒容满面。
Then the Queen Mother entered the hall, anger written across her face.
玉帝看这怒容，顿生诧异。
When the Emperor saw this, he was quite surprised.
因为王母平时保养得好，这张脸从来雪白粉嫩，跟剥了壳的鸡蛋似的。可今天……光滑极了的额头上竟出现了一道皱纹!
The
Queen Mother usually took very good care of herself, so her face always
looked white as snow, soft and fair, like a hard-boiled egg after
peeling of the shell. But today, there was a deep, hard wrinkle on her
normally smooth forehead!
玉帝知道老太婆脾气坏，就拐着弯问：“您那脑门上，是根头发，还是丝线？谁要是眼神差一些，还会当成皱纹呢。”
The
Jade Emperor knew his wife’s temperament was poor, so he asked
delicately: “Is that a hair laying on your forehead or a silk thread?
Somebody with bad vision might think that’s a wrinkle.”
“没错，就是皱纹。”王母挺干脆，“我正为这事来求陛下。”
“Oh no, it’s a definitely a wrinkle.” The Queen Mother said very frankly, “It’s the reason why I’m here to see Your Majesty.”
玉帝说：“我可没有什么美容膏、除皱霜能给你的。”
“Well I certainly don’t have any beauty cream or anti-wrinkle lotion for you.” said the Jade Emperor.
“什么呀！”王母叫起来，“我要你立刻派人替我破案！人家倒了霉你还说风凉话!”
“What
are you talking about?!” screamed the annoyed queen, “I want you to
order someone to investigate a crime! I’m in trouble and you’re
cracking wise!”
怎么回事？原来王母有一把团扇，是件宝贝，名“阴阳老少扇”。
What was the
problem? Normally, the Queen Mother carries a folding fan with her. It
was a treasure called “Yin and Yang, Youth and Elder Fan”.
扇子上一面画了一个老头儿，一面画了个娃娃。用画老头儿那面对人扇一扇，少可变老，用画娃娃这面对人扇一扇，老可变少。
One
side of the fan had a drawing of an old man, the other side a drawing
of a child. If the old man side is fanned at someone, the young can
grow old. The young side can make the old young again.
王母娘娘既不想变得更老，也不想变成小孩，她是害怕皱纹。
The
Queen Mother obviously doesn’t want to get any older, and she doesn’t
want to be a child again either, but she’s very afraid of wrinkles.
每天早晨用这宝贝扇子的有娃娃这面对着自己轻轻扇一下，脑门上要想长出来的皱纹就长不出来了。所以王母娘娘从来没有皱纹，王母娘娘一天也离不开这把阴阳老少扇。
Every
morning, she turns the child side to face her and fans lightly. This
way, if her face tries to grow some wrinkles, they just won’t grow.
This is the reason why the Queen Mother always looks so young, and why
she never lets the fan out of her sight.
“可是今天早晨宝扇不见了，不知被谁盗走了。”王母唠唠叨叨诉说着，“我问过天偷星，他说不是他干的。他虽然是专业水平，却从来规规矩矩。他偷东西是为了卖弄偷技，讲究‘有偷有还，再偷不难’。”
“But
today I can’t find my precious fan. I don’t know who stole it,” she
chattered worriedly, “I asked the King of Thieves, but he said he didn’t
take it. Although he is a master thief, he is very honorable and
moral. When he takes things, it’s just to show off his skills, never to
make a profit. He always says ‘Steal today, return tomorrow; It won’t be
hard to steal it again.”
玉帝便来查问：“昨夜把守南天门的是哪一班？有什么可疑迹象？”
The
Jade Emperor questioned his court: “Who was on the night shift at the
Southern Heavenly Gate last night? Were there any signs of suspicion?”
火班的班长尾火虎从床上被拖起，来向玉帝汇报：“是孙小圣和猪小能把守南天门。可是等我们巡逻回来，他俩不知哪去了。”
The
team leader of the Fire shift, Fire Tiger was pulled out of bed and
presented to the Jade Emperor to give a report: “Little Sage Sun and
Little Able Pig were on lookout duty last night. But when we came back
from patrol, they were gone.”
小圣和小能也被找来了。
So Little Sage and Little Able were brought before the Jade Emperor.
小能不好意思地说：“我们睡着了，不知怎么的，南天门就离开了我们。”
Little Able said shamefully: “We fell asleep. Then, somehow, the Southern Heavenly Gates just left us!”
小圣说：“不知怎么的，也许是我们离开了南天门。”
“I don’t know how, but probably WE left the Southern Heavenly Gates.” corrected Little Sage.
玉帝对太白金星说：“让巨灵神帮帮你的忙，查一查《天条大全》，值班睡觉，该判什么罪，该受什么罚。”
The
Jade Emperor spoke to Tai Bai Immortal: “Let the Giant Immortal help
you. Go look in the Complete Collection of Imperial Decrees for
anything related to the punishment for sleeping on duty.”
金星就带着巨灵神，来到书库查天条。
The Golden Star took the Giant Immortal to the Jade Archives to find the decrees.
因为天条多，书就要做得大一些。
There were a great many decrees, so the books were a little bigger than normal.
《天条大全》像楼阁一般竖立着。
The Complete Collection of Imperial Decrees was tall like a building, standing several stories high.
金星先让力大无穷的巨灵神把书翻开到第三千五百页，然后登上书库的阅览专用云，上升到第四万六千行，查到了有关值班睡觉的条款。
The
Tai Bai Immortal asked the Giant Immortal to turn the huge pages to
page three thousand five hundred. Then, he rode on the Archives’ special
reading cloud up to the forty six thousandth line and found the part
about sleeping on duty.
金星吃了一惊，这条款的惩罚办法是——“义务替玉帝剪指甲，剪到指甲不再长为止。或义务替玉帝洗脚，洗到这脚不再臭为止。”
Tai
Bai was shocked. This article’s method of punishment was: “Clip the
Jade Emperor’s toe nails until they are all short” or “Wash the Jade
Emperor’s feet until they don’t stink.”
金星挺喜欢小圣和小能这两个孩子，不忍心把他们罚得这样苦，便回禀玉帝说：“值班时睡觉，犯了值班睡觉罪，该罚他们以后值班时不睡觉。”
Tai
Bai was quite found of the little boys and couldn’t bare to give them
such a horrible punishment. When he returned to the Jade Emperor to
report, he lied saying: “When sleeping while on duty, it is called
sleeping on duty crime, and the punishment is they may not sleep during
their next shift.”
李天王出班奏道：“先慢定罪处罚，该去王母府中查看了再说。”
Li Tianwang
chimed in: “Let’s not worry about the punishment for now. Someone
should hurry and check on the Queen Mother first.”
玉帝便吩咐铁面天官：“你去走一趟吧。”
The Jade Emperor ordered Iron Mask High Officer: “You should go for a walk.”
这天官刚刚领旨出殿，李天王随后跟上：“天官留步！”
Understanding
this meant he should investigate the crime, Iron Mask hurried to follow
orders. Li Tianwang wasn’t far behind him: “High Officer, wait up!”
李天王从袖中取出一柄拂尘：“这是太乙真人赠我的现影拂尘，可助你破案。”
From
his sleeve he took out a horse tail whisk. “Tai Yi the Enlightened gave
this to me,” he told Iron Mask, “it will help you solve the case!”
铁面天官接过拂尘：“多谢天王。”
“Thank you, Tianwang.” Iron Mask said, accepting the gift.
到了王母府中，天官说了来意。王母便指一指她的百宝梳妆台：“宝扇就放在这里。”
When
he arrived at the Queen Mother’s residence, he explained why he had
come. The Queen Mother pointed to her Treasure Vanity: “I put my
precious fan here.”
天官发现窗户开着，问王母：“夜里这窗是关着的吧？”
The High Officer found the window open and asked: “You closed this window at night, right?”
王母说：“是的，不知怎么打开了。”
“Yes, I don’t know who opened it or when.” answered the Queen Mother.
铁面天官手持拂尘，走到窗前：“让我们看一看盗贼的身影。”
High
Officer Iron mask held the horse tail whisk and walked to the window.
“Let’s take a look at the thieves’ shadows.” he said aloud.
拂尘挥起，只在窗前地上轻轻一扫，地上便现出两个剪影。一个是猴形，一个是猪形。
He
waved the whisk on the floor in front of the window, lightly sweeping
the floor. Two shadow puppets appeared on the floor. One was a monkey
shadow. The other was a pig shadow.
铁面天官便去报告玉帝：“看来盗扇贼一个是猴，一个是猪。”
Iron
Mask returned to the Jade Emperor to report: “It looks like the fan
thieves are a monkey and a pig, Your Majesty,” he explained.
玉帝拈须自思：“昨夜孙小圣、猪小能擅离职守，正好出了盗案，身影又相符……”
The
Jade Emperor thought to himself: Last night Little Sage and Little
Able abandoned their posts, then there was a robbery, and the shadows
match…
玉帝差遣四天将：“孙小圣、猪小能有盗宝嫌疑，立即将他们关押审查。”
The Jade Emperor
sent four immortal generals: “Little Sage Sun and Little Able Pig are
suspected of theft. Put them under arrest at once for further
investigation.”
“遵旨。”
“Your Majesty!” the generals answered, and left to find the boys.
四天将出来，天将甲对伙伴们说：“此番动作，诸位是愿意省事些好，还是费事些好？”
The
four generals left the Entry Hall and their leader turned to speak to
the other three: “For this action, will it be better to save ourselves
some trouble, or to complicate things?”
三将说：“省事些好。”
“Save trouble!” all three answered together.
天将甲说：“领这点儿营养补贴，犯不着跟那两个愣小孩儿耗力伤神，我有个主意……”
“Take
your nutrition allowances,” the leader ordered, “it’s not worth it to
over work ourselves for these little brats. I’ve got an idea…”
四将来到星官府，叫出小圣和小能。
The four generals arrived at the Offices of the Constellations and called for Little Sage and Little Able.
“玉帝新造了一个戏院，请你们去看戏。”天将说。
“The Jade Emperor has built a new theatre and invites you to see a play.” said one general.
小圣、小能高高兴兴跟着天将去看戏。
The boys were happy to follow the generals to see a play.
他们走进一个大黑屋子，越走越黑。每走三步，就会遇到一对手执兵器、站得直直的士兵。
They
walked into a big dark room. The more they walked, the darker it was. A
few steps later, they met a pair of crossed swords, held by two
soldiers.
小圣指着士兵们问天将：“他们是演员，还是真的士兵？”
Little Sage pointed at the soldiers and asked a general: “Are they actors, or are they really soldiers?”
天将甲回答：“他们不动的时候，可以把他们当演员，一动就不行了。”
“When they’re not moving, you could call them actors,” the general answered, “but not when they start to move.”
小圣和小能被领进一个小房间。门立刻关紧了。这里连个窗户都没有，十分气闷。
Little
Sage and Little Able were led into a small room. The door immediately
shut tight. There were no windows in this room and it was very stuffy.
小能不耐烦地叫起来：“快开演哪!”
Little Able yelled impatiently: “Start the show!”
这时，一个腋下夹着案卷的官员，很威严地走向小房间，与四天将迎面相遇。
At
this time, a stately official holding a record scroll under his arm
walked in looking dignified. He stood in front of the four generals.
天将甲问：“温天君，审案子去？”
Their leader asked: “Lord Wen, are you here to interrogate?”
温天君目不斜视地“嗯”了一声。
“Mm-hm.” he said, focused on his work.
天将甲建议：“为了您的安全，您好用替身。”
“For your safety, you should use a stuntman.” suggested the general.
“嗯？”温天君想了想，点点头，“嗯。”
“Hmm?” thought the busy lord, and nodded, “Mm-hmm.”
不一会儿，小房间的天花板上掀起了一块，露出一个方洞。
Not long later, a plank of wood in the ceiling lifted away, and a small hole appeared.
小圣和小能觉得新奇，瞪大眼珠注意瞧。
Little Sage and Little Able felt curious, so they opened their eyes wide and looked up.
方洞里吊下一个夹着案卷的提线木偶，这木偶还在半空中就自我介绍：“我乃温天君是也。”
From the hole fell a little wooden puppet on string. Hanging in mid-air, the puppet introduced himself: “I am Lord Wen.”
两个“观众”立刻鼓起掌来。真的温天君在方洞上面提着线，配着音。
The
two little audience members started clapping for the funny puppet with
the funny name. The real Lord Wen was above the room, controlling the
strings and dubbing his voice.
只见那木偶掏出一支笔，打开一本册子，问：“你们为什么要偷王母的宝扇？”
Then, the puppet took out a brush and unrolled a scroll saying: “Why did you steal the Queen Mother’s prized fan?”
小哥儿俩听了发呆。
The two brothers stared blankly at the puppet.
小圣说：“什么宝扇？”
Little Sage said: “What fan?”
小能说：“我们什么也没偷！”
Little Able said: “We didn’t steal anything!”
木偶拿着的笔便在册子里写上：
The wooden puppet said nothing, but began writing on the scroll:
不说实话
Didn’t Tell the Truth
接下来，木偶宣布：“第二道是选择题。A.是孙小圣偷的。B.是猪小能偷的。C.是孙小圣和猪小能一起偷的。”
Next,
the puppet announced: “The second part is choice question. A: Little
Sage stole the fan. B: Little Able stole the fan. C: Little Sage and
Little Able stole the fan together.
小能被ABC搞糊涂了，问小圣：“怎么答？”
Little Able was confused by A, B, and C and asked Little Sage: “How do we answer?”
小圣猛地扑过去抱住木偶，温天君没防备，木偶被扯下半截身子。
Little Sage suddenly rushed over and grabbed the puppet. Lord Wen didn’t expect that, and the puppet was torn in half.
小圣对温天君喊：“你下来说说清楚。”
“Come down here and explain clearly!” Little Sage yelled.
温天君赶忙扔掉木偶：“好了，审问完毕。”说着便把掀开的盖板重新盖紧。
“Okay, the interrogation is finished.” said the cowardly lord. As he said it, he replaced the plank of wood in the ceiling.
再说星官府里，除觜宿、室宿之外的二十六宿，正在纷纷议论。
Meanwhile,
in the Offices of the Constellations, except for Fire Monkey and Fire
Pig, all the other 26 constellations were talking one after another.
星日马说：“小圣、小能怎么会去偷王母的扇子？”
Sun Horse said: “How could Little Sage and Little Able steal from the Queen Mother?”
娄金狗说：“他们又没有皱纹。”
Gold Dog said: “They don’t have any wrinkles, they don’t need the fan.”
角木蛟说：“也许他们想快点儿变成大人。”
Wood Bull said: “Maybe they want to grow up faster?”
箕水豹说：“孙悟空偷过蟠桃，恐怕有点儿遗传的。”
Water Leopard said: “Sun Wukong stole peaches from the Jade Palace, perhaps he taught his son bad habits.”
牛金牛推推心月狐：“都叫你智多星，你说说!”
Gold Ox said to Moon Fox: “Everyone calls you the Wise Fox, why don’t you speak up?”
心月狐眯起眼睛，聚聚神，“出事前后，李天王很起劲儿，会不会是他在捣鬼？”
Moon
Fox narrowed his eyes, gathered his thoughts, and said: “From the
beginning until the end, Li Tianwang was behaving strangely friendly and
energetic. Perhaps he was making some mischief?”
女土蝠自告奋勇：“我去打探一下。”
Lady Earth Bat volunteered: “I’ll go spy on him a little.”
那女宿现出蝙蝠本相，伸出翅膀拍出一阵响，便飘飘向天王府飞去。
That Bat turned into her bat form, spread her wings, and flapped all the way to Li Tianwang’s manor.
