The applications of Nuclear Medicine in
different medical disciplines have kept increasing in the past several decades.
As an important part of molecular imaging, SPECT/CT and PET/ CT have become
commonly used in Nuclear Medicine imaging modality. Nuclear Medicine, as an
important medical knowledge, has been independently and widely learned by
medical students including overseas students. More and more overseas students
come to China to learn medicine in recent years. Most of them apply for
Bachelor’ degree. It is necessary to edit an English textbook of Nuclear
Medicine for the undergraduate program. Physicians from Nuclear Medicine
department of Tianjin Medical University General Hospital have been devoted to
Nuclear Medicine education since the 1980s. Supported and organized by Tsinghua
University Press and Tianjin Medical University, twelve Nuclear Medicine
experts and scholars from nine universities in China make contributions to this
textbook, which is based on Nuclear Medicine The requisites(edition 4) written
by Harvey A. Ziessman MD and published by Saunders.
In order to meet the basic needs of both
international and domestic medical students, necessary adaptations and
revisions are carefully made from the original book. In addition, we reorganize
the chapters and make a new chapter of radionuclide therapy in order to give
students a systemic knowledge in this field. This new textbook covers three
parts, including Basic Principles, Clinical Nuclear Medicine and Radionuclide
Therapy. The chapters follow an outline format and the main section (Clinical
Nuclear Medicine) are divided by organ-systems (i.e., Central Nervous System,
Cardiac System, Endocrine System, etc).
Although this edition is primarily designed
for overseas medical students, it is also a good reference book for Nuclear
Medicine physicians and technicians, resident doctors in other specialties. We
hope it is helpful to all the readers. We would like to share our limited
knowledge and experience with the readers. Comments and suggestions for this
book are always welcome.
In compiling this book, we received
assistance from many sources, and would like to thank those people for their
supports.

Chapter 1
Physics of Nuclear Medicine
Nuclear medicine involves the administration of 160 radiopharmaceuticals to patients for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. For diagnostic imaging, 140 radiation emitted from these radiopharmaceuticals must be detected by external detectors to determine 120 its in vivo distribution. For therapeutic nuclear medicine, some of the emitted radiation must be 100 absorbed by targeted tissues to achieve the desired effect. In both cases, an understanding of the nature of the radioactivity, the amount administered, the radiation emissions, and how it interacts with matter is essential. The essential aspects of the basic physics
