在对一门语言的学习和运用中,词汇、语法和修辞是十分重要的三大要素。如果说语言是一座大厦,词汇就是砖块,语法就是框架,而修辞就是外装修和内装饰。“修辞学属于艺术的部门,语法学属于科学的部门。”(著名语言学家王力语)“Grammer is the law of language, considered as language; rhetoric is the art of language, considered as thought. Grammar tells what is correct; rhetoric tells what is effective and pleasing。(见伍海伦《英文修辞手册》)这充分表明,在掌握一门语言时,人们既需要遵循语法规则,又需要讲求语言技巧;既要考虑表达的正确性,又要顾及表达的生动性。没有规范的遣词造句的能力,表达则文理不通;没有得体的修辞技巧,表达则平铺直叙,味同嚼蜡。
在我国,近年来功能教学法、听说法、交际法盛行于中、小学,课堂看似活跃,学生对英语学习的生吞活剥,所形成的结果就是表达不规范,逻辑不严密。进入大学后语法的学习非但未能得到及时弥补,修辞知识的系统学习更被严重忽略。由于语法和修辞的缺失,学生的写作便是语病连篇,表现力更是无从谈起。掌握语言规范,将语言运用得优美、生动、准确而高效,就需要借助语法与修辞。在全球一体化空前加速的今天,熟练掌握作为全球通用语的英语,是融入国际社会、争取更大的发展空间的必要条件。这在校大学生来说,已经成为他们在大学阶段必须完成的一项紧迫任务。的确,语言的素质才是的、同时也是基本的素质。
语言是用以满足人们交际需要的工具。语言在长期发展中形成了自身的规律及其特色,这就是语法和修辞。语法是人们从大量的语言现象中归纳出来的语言的组织规律,即一系列的词形变化以及组词成句的规则;修辞是其母语使用者在长期的语言使用中建立的特有的表述习惯。语言的学习和运用需要遵循语法规则;语言表达技巧的提高需要掌握各种修辞格。在英国的中学阶段,有专门的语法学校,为的是让学生掌握规范的语言,具备良好的语言素养。在英语的母语国家尚且如此,在非母语国家且非属于同一语系国家的中国,学校不系统开设语法和修辞课程,使学生得到相关的系统训练,学生英语学习的难以为继就不言而喻了。
本书作者长期讲授大学英语专业英语语法与修辞课程,建立了一定的积累,对大学生的实际需求也有较多了解。本书的写作是以作者的教学讲义为基础,再加以充实完善而成。本书坚持一贯的语言直观性、工具性和实用性原则,表述言简意赅,辅以具有一定语境的句子作印证,通过演绎与归纳相结合的方法来研究语言现象,使学习者以较短的时间轻松解决学、用中碰到的实际问题,实现单位时间的效率。其使用人群主要是具有中学程度的英语基础语法知识,且需要进一步增强英语语感,提高英语阅读理解能力和运用英语的准确性和生动性的各专业在校大学生和有这方面需求的社会人士。考虑到语法和修辞的学习和运用需要辅之以一定量的强化练习,作者针对重要的语法及修辞项目编入了相应的练习,以强化学习效果。同时针对学生的实际需求,作者还在附录中增加了标点符号的用法指南、介词短语及其搭配等诸多实用内容。
由于编者水平有限,书中遗误在所难免,诚望语法界同仁和本书使用者批评指正,以期改进。
