Your Mind Is a Garden
Some time ago, Mary and I were visiting somefriends in the
country. We were staying at a beautifullittle guest cabin,
surrounded by fruit trees, flowersand even a few goats. Painted
above the doorway inbrightly colored, flowing letters were the
words:
Your mind is a garden.
Your thoughts are the seeds.
You can grow flowers or
You can grow weeds.
Little did we know it at the time, but this littlepoem was to
have a profound affect both on ourthought patterns as well as our
artworks.
It started almost as a kind of game. We decidedto make a real
effort to watch our thoughts and seeexactly what it was that we
were planting in our own“Mind Garden”. It was difficult at first,
but gradually,we began to pay more and more attention to
whatthoughts were repeatedly flashing across our minds.
How disturbing it was to discover that manyof these “seeds”
were extremely negative thoughtsdestined to grow patches of thorny
thistles andstinging nettles in our daily lives!
We gradually came to see how so many of theproblems and
difficulties we were encountering in ourlives had their beginnings
in the seeds of doubt, fearand anxiety that we were continually
planting in ourminds.
It does take effort but like anything else it getseasier with
practice, and the amazing thing is, aswe became more and more aware
of these negativethoughts we are able to say:
“No! I will not plant this weed in the garden of mymind.”
I will consciously choose to plant somethingbetter. The
results are truly spectacular.
When you start to consciously cultivate yourown mind garden,
you will truly be amazed at thechanges which begin to happen in
your life. Obstaclesdisappear, barriers fall away, and things that
youonce thought were either impossible or very far awaywill
suddenly come into view.
Any garden is an ongoing process. It’s not enoughto just plant
a single seed of happiness and thenforget about it. Your frail
little seedlings would soonbe choked by weeds. It is necessary to
continuouslypull out and throw away those weeds of fear, doubtand
anxiety as soon as they appear.
Love, happiness and tranquility are all contagious.People who
are continuously planting these seedsin their own minds are also
planting them in otherpeople’s. Remember,
Your mind is a garden.
Your thoughts are the seeds.
You can grow flowers or
You can grow weeds.
So ask yourself, what are you going to grow inthe glorious
garden of your mind? May your life befilled with love, happiness
and inspiration.
profoundadj. 深远的
thornyadj.
consciouslyadv.
cultivatev.
