钱锺书先生一生酷爱读书，每读一书必作笔记，留下了数量惊人的从未面世的读书笔记，由杨绛女士保存至今。外文笔记是其中数量*、价值可观的一部分，原稿共211本，约计35000页。包括英语、法语、德语、意大利语、西班牙语、拉丁语、希腊语等七种语言，所涉题材包括哲学、语言学、文学、文学批评、文艺理论、心理学、人类学等各个领域。
