2022年攻读硕士学位研究生入学考试试题答案解析
Section A:Please briefly answer the following questions.(4×5 points)
- Who is the author of Paradise Lost? Please comment on Santa in the poem.
参考答案∶John Milton.
Satan is one of the central characters of Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost which is based on the Christian story of the fall of humanity. The theme of the epic is man’s disobedience and the loss of Paradise, with its prime cause—Satan who rebels against God’s authority and tyranny. Satan is meant to be the antagonist of the poem, but he is also the most dynamic, interesting character. He is not only cunning and deceptive: he is also able to motivate the rebel angels to continue in the rebellion after their agonizing defeat in the Angelic War against God. Somewhere, he is a leader, and at some places his pride, misconception and ignorance came across while talking about revenge. This character’s main purpose is to fight against the absolute power. He wants to regain his glory. Being the leader, he is the motivator and uses powerful words to lead his army. In this sense, he is a hero.
2.Why do we say the west wind in “Ode to the West Wind”is the “destroyer and
preserver”?
Percy Bysshe Shelley was one of the most revolutionary poets of the Romantic Revival. Ode to the West Wind is one of his most representative works.
According to Shelley’s note, “this poem was conceived and chiefly written in a wood that skirts the Arno, near Florence, and on a day when that tempestuous wind, whose temperature is at once mild and animating, was collecting the vapours which pour down the autumnal rains.”Shelley chose the west wind as it seemed to him to be symbolic of a revolutionary force that would bring about change in the world order.Shelley addresses the west wind as the very breath of autumn. The west wind drives away the withered leaves. So it is the dlestroyer of the dead leaves. It also acts as a preserver as it scatters the seeds underground where they lie buried all the winter. These seeds shoot forth into lively plants in springand fill the plains with fragrant and colorful flowers. Also, the poet implores the west wind to make him its lyre so that his prophetic ideas now lying dead in his mind may spread over the whole world for a better and regenerate world.
3.Why do American naturalists have an inevitably pessimistic view?
Naturalists was greatly influenced by Darwin’s evolutionary theory. The American naturalists accepted the more negative interpretation of Darwin’s theory and used it to account for the behavior of those characters in literary works who were regarded as more or less complex combinations of inherited attributes, their habits conditioned by social and economic forces.
Secondly, American naturalists is evolved from realism when the author’s tone in writing becomes less serious and less sympathetic but more ironic and more pessimistic. It’s no more than a gloomy philosophical approach to reality, or to human existence. Dreiser is a leading figure of this school.
- Who is the author of the poem? Do you know the title of the poem?
What in your view is it about?
It was a long time ago.
I have almost forgotten my dream.
But it was there then,
In front of me, Bright like a sun——My dream.
And then the wall rose,
Rose slowly, Slowly,
