辛苦一生书里活,大师之师柳诒徵
柳诒徵的同事吴宓在自编年谱中也说:“南京高师校之成绩、学风、声誉,全由柳先生一人多年培植之功。论现时东南大学之教授人才,亦以柳先生博雅鸿通,为第一人。”吴宓在《空轩诗话》中甚至将柳诒徵与梁启超相提并论,指出:“近今吾国学者人师,可与梁任公先生联镳并驾,而其治学方法亦相类似者,厥惟丹徒柳翼谋先生诒徵。两先生皆宏通博雅,皆兼包考据、义理、词章,以综合通贯之法治国学,皆萃其精力于中国文化史。”
柳诒徵认为,儒家经典《诗》《书》《礼》《乐》,皆史也,皆载前人之经验而表示其得失以为未经验者之先导也;另一面,中国史学通贯儒学,儒学精神是中国古代史学的核心。对孔教正本清源,指出了儒学之於现代社会的意义,“以儒家之根本精神,为解决今世人生问题之要义”“在现代科学昌明的物质状态下”,以孔教拯救现代社会,“不至以物质生活问题之纠纷,妨害精神生活之向上,“此吾侪对于全人类之一大责任也”。
《国史要义》是柳诒徵的代表作,书中引证大量史料,从史原、史权、史统、史联、史德、史识、 史义、史例、史术、史化十个方面对中国史学传统进行了全面回顾,阐述了中国史学的精义所在和基本特征。同时也对如何看待西方的史学理论和研究方法提出了自己的看法。全书叙论结合,观点鲜明,充分体现了柳先生“宏通博雅”“文理密察”的学术研究特点。
